Square and Block: Connecting Agent Discovery to Merchant Orders and Payments
Product analysis · Sources reviewed October 28, 2026. Public information only; no merchant integration or real order was tested.
A user asks in a conversation: “What restaurants are nearby, and can I order lunch?” For the restaurant, the key questions are whether its menu can be found, price and availability are accurate, and the customer can complete an order.
Square starts on the merchant side, connecting existing product, location and transaction capabilities to discovery and some ordering experiences in AI conversations. Square announcement
Background: from accepting payments to running a business
Square, a Block merchant-services brand, helps businesses accept payments and operate. For a restaurant or retailer, catalogs, stock, location, orders, staff and data matter alongside payments.
As agents change discovery, Square’s question is how to make merchants already using Square visible in a new channel and return suitable transactions to their workflows. It does not first need to issue a wallet holding funds for every agent.
An illustrative lunch order
This is conceptual. Agent platforms, merchant categories and regions support different interactions: some may allow ordering in conversation, others may send the customer to a merchant site or another interface.
What does Square provide?
In July 2026 Square announced a ChatGPT app and Claude plugin to help eligible merchants be discovered through AI conversations and accept orders directly in supported experiences. It said eligible merchants needed no extra technical setup or Square marketplace commission. Announcement
| Participant | Goal | Still to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer | Find a suitable merchant and complete an order | Where ordering, payment and refunds occur |
| Merchant | Accurate information and orders in existing workflows | Eligibility, inventory sync, fees and disputes |
| Agent platform | Present actionable merchant options | Sources, ranking, region and account conditions |
| Square | Bring merchant capabilities into new channels | Merchant coverage and transaction charges |
“No extra Square marketplace commission” does not mean processing, other services or third-party channels are free. Payment handling depends on the order path and merchant agreement.
Discovery versus an agent wallet
An agent wallet focuses on control of funds, authorization and payment tools. Square’s merchant entry focuses on whether products can be discovered and orders accurately received and fulfilled.
An available wallet cannot complete a purchase if merchant data is stale, stock is wrong or an order cannot be created. Conversely, available product information still requires a payment method supported by the channel.
Business model: help merchants sell and connect existing services
Square already provides payment and merchant software services. AI discovery could help retain merchant relationships and create opportunities to process orders and payments. This is business analysis, not evidence of a particular amount of incremental agent-channel revenue.
Evaluate separately:
- How many users are incremental, rather than shifted from an existing channel.
- Conversion from recommendation to order and fulfillment.
- Who pays standard processing and other service fees.
- Merchant control over product details, hours and order status.
- How users cancel, obtain refunds or contact the merchant.
The merchant’s complete path
The announcement described an initial group of eligible US food-and-beverage merchants using Square Online Ordering; verify conditions by platform and region.
| Stage | Merchant provides or confirms | Customer impact |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Name, location and hours | Is the recommendation accurate? |
| Menu | Products, prices and sold-out status | Can the user select an available item? |
| Order receipt | Options, contact and pickup time | Can the merchant prepare it as requested? |
| Payment and support | Payment status, cancellation and refund | Can the customer understand the order and money? |
If a price changes between the conversation and checkout, users should be able to review it. If a shop is closed or an item is unavailable, a recommendation should not be treated as an accepted order. Actual interactions depend on channel and merchant settings.
How can merchants assess value?
Measure impressions, clicks, valid orders and fulfilled orders from conversational entry over a week; compare existing search, maps and website orders. Identify returning customers who merely changed channels, and account for menu maintenance, refunds and all fees.
For AgentWallets, Square fits as a merchant-side distribution and transaction case linked to relevant payment tools, rather than a direct same-layer competitor to an on-chain wallet.
A lesson for the directory
Label Square as a merchant-discovery and transaction entry and relate it to wallets, card networks and processors. A complete transaction must be findable, purchasable, fulfilled and supportable when something goes wrong; counting wallets alone does not explain the full chain.

Different questions from Stripe and PayPal merchant tools
Square’s public case emphasizes discovery and order receipt for existing merchants. Stripe Agentic Commerce Suite covers product, checkout and scoped credentials; PayPal Agent Ready connects agent checkout to merchants already using services such as Braintree. Channel integration, in-conversation payment and merchant workflows vary; announcements alone do not establish whose merchant reach is larger.
A restaurant can ask whether every menu change syncs, combinations and notes are retained, sold-out items are handled in the existing point-of-sale system, pickup times can change, and customers know where to request refunds. Public material does not supply a single answer for every case.
Assessment: Square already participates in merchants’ daily operations. Agent payment is one part; keeping products, orders and fulfillment consistent determines whether the new entry point earns repeat use.
