Virtual Cards, Payment Tokens and Agent Wallets: How Do They Relate?
When an agent pays for an online service, you may hear “give it a virtual card,” “use a token,” or “connect a wallet.” These describe different layers: the form of a credential, a mechanism for substituting sensitive data, and a tool for managing or using payment capabilities.
| Term | Meaning | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual card | A card credential without a physical card, usable in supported card-payment settings | It automatically has every agent spending control |
| Payment token | A digital identifier substituting for sensitive data such as a card number | It is cryptocurrency, or risk-free for anyone who obtains it |
| Agent wallet | A tool giving an agent controlled access to funds or payment credentials; features vary | It must be on-chain or hold assets itself |
“Token” here means a payment credential token. Blockchain tokens use the same word for a different concept.
This shows one possible combination. Not every virtual card is tokenized, and an agent wallet need not use a card. An agent might instead sign with an on-chain wallet.
Why use a payment token?
Visa Token Service describes substituting tokens for card numbers; supported configurations can restrict their use by device, merchant, number of transactions or duration. This can reduce exposure of the original card number. Scope and actual restrictions depend on the scheme and participants; not every token has the same constraints.
A virtual card may have its own limit, freeze control or purpose restrictions depending on the issuer. Virtual cards, tokens and budget policies can be combined, but none automatically guarantees the others.
Questions for a provider
- Does the agent receive a full credential, a restricted token, or only access to a controlled interface?
- Who enforces per-transaction and total limits, merchant restrictions and expiry?
- What happens to submitted orders after a credential is disabled?
- Does the issuer support the region, merchant type and unattended use case?
- Can the user inspect transactions and contact support about disputes?
For example, a research-only virtual card with only a total spending limit may not determine whether a purchase actually serves research. Verify that the restriction is connected to the payment path.
